Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) is performed in conjunction with an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) cycle and is used to select embryos with the highest likelihood of resulting in a healthy on-going pregnancy. Various types of PGT are available, depending on the needs of the individuals.

PGT-SR allows for a viable pregnancy, reducing or avoiding the chance of a failed implantation, miscarriage and/or the birth of a child with congenital anomalies, resulting from an unbalanced chromosome translocation.

Preimplantation Genetic Testing Human Leukocyte Antigen (PGT-HLA)

PGT-HLA identifies embryos that are HLA compatible with a child who is in need of a bone marrow or cord blood transplant used to treat a sibling affected with certain blood disorders.

PGT-HLA is requested by couples where a previous child is in need of a bone marrow or cord blood transplant due to a genetic disorder. In planning future pregnancy, not only is it desired to have a child without the disorder, but an HLA-compatible child whose umbilical cord blood can be used for stem cell transplantation, to provide normally functioning bone marrow.

Understanding IVF & PGT

In Vitro Fertilization is the most common method of assisted reproductive technology and is an essential part of the process that includes Preimplantation Genetic Testing or PGT (formerly known as PGD or PGS).

An IVF cycle begins with injections to the woman in order to stimulate her ovaries to produce multiple eggs (oocytes). Once the eggs are retrieved from the woman, they are fertilized by a single sperm injection in a controlled lab environment. These fertilized eggs, now called embryos, grow into a desired state of development where they can be biopsied and tested for specific inherited genetic disease or chromosomal abnormalities. Healthy embryos can be identified and recommended for implantation back into the female patient improving the chances of having a successful and healthy pregnancy.
